The History Of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisations
Until about 45 years ago, those of the fortunate devotees who had come in close proximity of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba and those who were congregating at His Divine Lotus Feet experiencing and realising the Divinity of Bhagawan were carrying out in their own way, bhajans, service activities and various other spiritual activities in their respective areas in accordance with the teachings of Bhagawan Baba and were enjoying the consequent bliss.
On 18th of March 1963, for the first time, Sri Satya Sai Bhajana Centre was inaugurated in Prashanthi Nilayam in the Divine presence to carry out bhajans in a systematic and a regular way with certain rules and regulations. In a couple of years such Bhajana Mandalis came into existence in various parts of Andhra Pradesh, Tamilnadu, Karnataka, Orissa, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab etc.
In August 1965, In Bombay (now known as Mumbai), the devotees formed a registered body to put into practice the various teachings of Bhagawan during Dussera celebrations the same year. This body can be said to be the first ever Bhagwan Sri Satya Seva Samithi. The devotees from different parts of the country who assembled at Prasanthi Nilayam during the following Birth Day Celebrations came to know about the formation of Bombay Samithi and came forward to form similar units in their respective areas.
April 1967, (Abbottsbury) Madras. First All-India Conference: To bring all the Samithis thus formed in a uniform pattern, the first All India conference of Bhagwan Sri Satya Sai Seva Organisations was held in April1967, at Abbottsbury in the city of Madras (now known as Chennai) and the necessary rules and regulations were formulated to bring all Samithis under a common body /organisation to run the units effectively. Bhagawan gave a call to HIS devotees “to march ahead with boldness and unity in search of God”. He also urged HIS devotees to “worship the divinity in the hearts of their fellow beings by rendering various services and thus striving to help those who are afflicted with sufferings and are in dire need of help”.
May 1968, Bombay, First World conference & Second All – India Conference: It was identified and stated that bhajans, Nagar Sankeertans and Study Circles, if properly conducted, would develop peoples’ faith in God and increase their devotion. Necessity of Seva Dal was recognised.
November 1969, Prasanthi Nilayam. Third All-India conference: Decision was taken to form Mahila Vibhag and Bal Vihar.
November 1970, Prasanthi Nilayam, Fourth all-India Conference: Bhagwan declared that selfless service was the first stepping stone to spiritual progress and if service was carried out with love and tolerance, there would be peace and prosperity in the world and such an act would be naturally dear to H/M. Basic Guidelines to active Workers were formulated.

December 1971, Madras, Fifth All-India Conference: Services in the fields of Health and Education introduced. Name of Bal Vihar changed to Bal Vikas & the term ‘Teacher’ changed to “Guru”. Various Wings of the Organisation e.g. Bhajan Mandali, Study circle, Seva Dal, Mahila Vibhag and Bal Vikas have to work under the auspices of SSSS Samithi and not independently.

1975, Prasanthi Nilayam. Second world conference & Seventh All-India Conference: A clarion call was given to the delegates to realised the divinity within by practising Truth, Righteousness, peace and Love in their daily lives. The main aim of the organisation, it was stated, was to remove all obstacles in the path of man becoming Madhava. To make organisation acceptable to people of all religions and all castes. To realise that all religions are holy paths to the same goal. To form “World council of Sri Sathya Sai Organisations” at Dharmakshetra, Bombay.

1977, Prasanthi Nilayam, Eighth All-India conference: For the first time, in this Conference, greater and sole importance was given to individual, Sadhana. It was stated that every worker and his family members should carry out their personal Sadhana with utmost devotion and steadfastness. Only then could they realise the all pervasive nature of divinity and the inner significance of bhajans. The delegates were urged to carry out service activities so as to reflect spirituality in all aspects. To form a committee at National Level & observe the working of Bal vikas.

1980, Prasanthi Nilayam. Third World Conference & Ninth All-India Conference:
Decisions were taken to introduce Door to door Health programme and to conduct a study circles in a more comprehensive way i.e., covering (a) Agricultural and Industrial workers: (b) Devotees and (c) Educationalists and intellectuals in the Society with topics of Karma, Bhakthi and Jnana respectively. The aim of all these was to increase spiritual thinking in people and to enable them to take part in the silent spiritual Revolution being carried out by Bhagawan. Shifting of World council office from Dharmakshetra to Prasanthi Nilayam.
During this conference, it was decided to include in the existing Rules and Regulations Book special chapter containing Six Permanent Objectives of the organisation and 9-point Code of Conduct. Responding to the prayers of the Organisation Members, Bhagawan, out of “His infinite Grace and Mercy” granted Divine Permanent Charter to the Organisation which was published on 14-01-1981by the then World council. It contained the following Six Permanent Objectives of the Organisation and 9-Point code of Conduct to be observed by the members.

6 Permanent Objectives of the Organisation:
  1. The Advent of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba as declared by HIM is for the establishment of Sanathana Dharma.
  2. This World Organisation is a Spritual Organisation founded for the blossoming of human excellence amongst whole Mankind, not recognising any distinctions or separateness on the basis of religion, caste, colour or creed.
  3. The purpose of this Organisation is for establishing and promoting the content of such Sanathana Dharma and also to establish the Sai Philosophy of Oneness (Unity) of the essence of all religions.
  4. The most fundamental object of this Organisation, as laid down by Bhagawan is, “to Awaken in Man, the awareness of the Divinity INHERENT in him” by propagating through practice and examples, the basic principles of Sathya (Truth), Dharma (Righteousness), Shanthi (Peace) and Prema (Love) in one’s daily life as set by Bhagawan.
  5. To experience this Divinity, mere environment and circumstances outside are not sufficient but a change in the minds of men is necessary. This has to be experienced and expressed through the Organisational environment.
  6. The activities of the Organisation are only means to the spiritual progress in this direction. This progress will ultimately enable everyone to enjoy inner peace, now withstanding the stresses, the ups and downs of life.

To achieve maximum results towards these objectives, the organisation shall strive:
  1. To help the individual
    • to be aware of the Divinity that is inherent in him and to conduct himself accordingly:
    • to translate into practice in daily life, Divine Love and perfection and therefore,
    • to fill one’s life with joy, harmony, beauty, grace, human excellence and lasting happiness.
  2. To ensure that all human relations are governed by the Principles of Sathya (Truth), Dharma (Right Conduct), Prema (Love), Shanthi (Peace) and Ahimsa (Non-Violence)&
  3. To make devotees of any religion more sincere and dedicated in the practice of their respective religions by understanding properly the true spirit of religion.

Bhagawan, in HIS infinite mercy , has Ordained the “9-point code of conduct” which every member of the Organisation must abide by and undertake as an integral part of one’s daily life and as one’s own spiritual Sadhana. The “9—Point code of conduct”:
  1. Daily Meditation and prayer.
  2. Devotional singing/prayer with members of one’s family once a week.
  3. Participation of the children of the family in the Bal vikas programmes conducted by the Organisation.
  4. Attendance at least once a month at Bhajan or Nagar Sankeerthan programme conducted by the Organisation
  5. Participation in community service and other programmes of the Organisation.
  6. Regular study of Sai Literature
  7. Speaking softly and lovingly with everyone with whom one come in contact.
  8. Not to indulge in talking ill of others, especially in their absence.
  9. Putting into practice the principle of “Ceiling on Desires” and utilize any savings thereby for the service of mankind.

July 6, 1982. International committee for 60th Birth day Celebrations: At this stage elders of the organisation started thinking of 60th Birth-day celebrations of Bhagawan Baba. They were of the opinion that it would not be appropriate to celebrate the event for a day or for a week and that too for our pleasure. The right way to celebrate the Lord’s birth-day was to put in special efforts to realise the objectives for which the Avatar has descended and to implementing the teachings of Bhagawan in daily life. For this purpose an International committee was constituted three years before the 60th Birth-day celebrations. On the 6th of July 1982, on the sacred Guru Poornima day, the 60th Birth-day celebrations committee started functioning and has formulated Four Objectives for the Organisations’ functioning in accordance with which, the various service activities have to be carried out over a three-year period.

November 1982, Prasanthi Nilayam. The Tenth All-India Conference & The Four Objectives of the Organisation formulated by the 60th Birth Day Celebrations committee:
  1. to increase man-hours on services relating to National Health and Welfare,
  2. to improve various spiritual techniques so as to deepen and strengthening Spiritual base and people’s faith in Bhagawan’s teachings.
  3. To spread Sai Message which is Divine, Noble and All Unifying in its nature and which acts as soothing balm to the faction-ridden and strife torn society of today, and
  4. To impose Ceiling on desires and to put into practice the teachings of Bhagawan in one’s daily life.

The inner spiritual significance of the above objectives in systematic spiritual uplift of a person has to be explained. Keeping in view the four objectives mentioned above, various service activities were formulated for different wings of the organisation.

December, 1983, Prasanthi Nilayam (International Rally of Bal-vikas) ;

November, 1984 Prasanthi Nilayam (International Sevadal conference) &

November, 1985, Prasanthi Nilayam (The Fourth World Conference and Eleventh All-India Conference) :

The above events were the highlights of Bhagawan’s 60th Birth-day Celebrations spread over three year period. It would not be an exaggeration to say that during 1984 and 1985 conferences, the whole world was taken by surprise at the various educational and medical services rendered in all the villages of Sri Satya Sai Taluk. During the International Sevadal conference in November, 1984, various wings of the organisations such as Bhajana Mandali, Seva Dal, Study Circle, Mahila Vibhag, Mahila Seva Dal, Bal-Vikas etc., were classified into three categories:

(1) Spiritual Wing (2) Service Wing and (3) Educational Wing.

The Fourth World Conference gave a call to the delegates to try and achieve the integration of man-kind by carrying out various services in accordance with the four objectives laid down by the International Committee for the 60th Birth-day celebrations. Each of the three newly formed wings had to carry out services in accordance with the four objectives and this provides scope to bring about integration in the organisation before it can be achieved in the society. On this occasion it was stressed, that strengthening and widening ‘ spiritual base’ among people should be one of the four objectives of our service activities.

At this juncture, with a view to increase various activities, 13 office-bearers at district level were nominated. It was soon found out that such a multiplicity of office-bearers not only hindered the work but also led to occasional frictions in the organisation. Bhagawan nipped it in the bud by bringing about structural changes in the organisation in 1987 and to make the members efficient instruments in the Divine Mission.

November, 1987 Prasanthi Nilayam. All-India Active Workers Conference (Known as the 12th All-India conference) : The World council was dissolved exactly after twelve years of its existence. International chairman was nominated to guide and advise the overseas units. All India president was nominated to guide the units in India. Organisation structured. Basic guidelines were given. All India president will be assisted by the 3 wings co-ordinators at National level and by four central coordinators at Zonal level. For each State, there will be one State President to guide the units in his state and will be assisted by 3 Mahila coordinators for three wings at State level and by State coordinators each o f whom will be in charge of 3 allotted districts in the State. All posts of district level office bearers were abolished. At samithi level, there will be one convenor of samithi who will be assisted by the 3 Co-ordinators of the 3 wings of the samithi. All active workers are members of the Samithi. The Educational Wing Coordinator at Samithi level will be a Mahila who will also act as sole representative of Mahila active workers.

The Divine Guidelines for the Organisation : The Divine Discourses given by Bhagawan to the Organisation members on the 19th, 21st and 24th November, 197; on 15th February and on 30th July, 1988 form the basic guidelines to active workers.

1988, The silver Jubilee celebrations of the Organisation all over India : The Silver Jubilee celebrations of the Organisation were conducted during 1988 all over the country. In 1988, the units in A.P.State conducted the celebrations throughout the year in a unique and impressive manner and as a climax they organised a huge rally of impressive cultural programmes in the Divine presence at prasanthi Nilayam and in the selected villager of Sri Sathya Sai Taluka.

November 1990, Prasanthi Nilayam. Fifth World conference & Thirteenth All-India Conference:

The Conference reiterated that adherence to the Divine Charter; the 9-point code of Conduct; and the Rules and Regulations of the Organisation is the sure way for the development of the organisation. It was resolved to establish a samithi or Bhajana Mandali in those areas/districts which have no Samithis at present. It was also decided to improve sevadal and Bal-Vikas Programmes and to conduct as many Training Programmes as possible. Bhagawan gave a clarion call to delegates on 24th of November, 1990: “All of you should become instrumental in marking your friends and relatives join the organisation and thereby derive the joy and delight of serving society & become recipients of Divine Grace and Love.”

November 1995, Prasanthi Nilayam.Sixth world Conference & Fourteenth All-India conference:

The nine-point resolution in this conference strongly stressed the dire” necessity of intensive spiritual preparation” for the development of the Organisation. Bhagawan’s clarion call: **To give up harmful habits i.e. Smoking, drinking of intoxicants, eating non-vegetarian food and gambling; ** To maximise the use of time and energy for organizational activity & ** To practice harmony in thought, word and deed. ** To remove mental barriers about work being personal, official and organisational. ** to accept every work as God’s work! ** To work and dedicate entire life’s work to Swami. ** To carry out personal Sadhana without negative feelings and without hurting other’s feelings. Not to feel high or low of others because of their different positions in the organisation and to have proper regard to everyone as a chosen one of the Lord. ** To feel the Divinity in all members and take part regularly and actively in all the activities o f the organisation.. ** To experience the organisational activity as one’s own activity in practice. ** To get closer to fellow member through Sadhana camps. ** To do away with the tendencies of complaining and writing letters to Bhagawan with allegations on others. ** To plan all our activity as dedication to the Lord, which purifies and takes the individual to spiritual heights. All this leads to change in the individual, the organisation, the society and the World at large.

Over the past 75 years. The main points discussed and resolved were: Concentrate and carry out on Seva towards individuals in the members’ respective areas. Our behaviour and actions must be such that we are recognizable as Servants of Sai. Must have confidence and faith that Bhagawan I s always with us in every activity of ours. Every devotee must be well informed of what Bhagawan is doing for society and educate the devotees and public on benevolent acts of Bhagawan. Endeavour constantly to demonstrate our love and care for fellow men.

7th World conference Resolutions-ways and means to implement: (1) Reconstruction of Society through individual change is the key approach of Bhagawan. Individual change can be brought about by: (a) extending our love to the needy in the form of food, clothes, medicine and education, (b) providing the necessary means to earn livelihood, (c) instilling the necessary spiritual base of: love of god, fear of sin and morality in Society & amiable behaviour to fellow beings, (d) making one realise the necessity of living within one’s means of life i.e., practicing ceiling on desires and (f) making people addicted to smoking and alcoholics bid goodbye to such habits in the interest of one’s health and the economic well being of the family. (2) In order to bring people going astray onto the right path, one should possess exemplary conduct and attractive power arising out of one’s purity and spirituality. These can be acquired by following Bhagawan’s teachings such as (A) Speaking always obligingly, (B) not blaming and hurting others and (C) always helping others to the extent possible. (3) We must have full confidence that Bhagawan is with us in all our activity. Having such confidence, (i) We will not hesitate to undertake a good work, (ii) We will not neglect our work, when we feel that Swami is watching us. (iv) We can not claim any credit to our work and attain Nishkama Karma yoga. (4) Members should thoroughly know what Bhagawan Ii doing for the welfare of the society, particularly in the fields of (*) Education, (*) Medicine, (*) Religion, (*) Unity of faiths, (*) Politics, (*) Economy and (*) Broad understanding of Society. These will enable the members to carry forward the divine Message effectively. To implement the above individual approach suggestion, we have to select very needy families to render suitable help in 3 ways: (A) Providing food, clothes, medical help when necessary. (B) Providing suitable means to enable the selected family to earn its livelihood & (C) Rendering financial help to the eligible and promising school going children, if any, to prosecute their studies.
